Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of National Poetry Month
Happy National Poetry Month! As Andrews McMeel Publishing (AMP), we recognize the significance of National Poetry Month and are excited to focus on our diverse roster of poets we have published over the years. It is important to us to lift up the wide-range of creators and poets that we are proud to work with— as they each bring something unique and original to the table.
The Academy of American Poets founded National Poetry Month in April 1996 to honor and celebrate the defining role that poetry plays in shaping our culture. This year, it is the 25th anniversary of what has become a literary tradition that many partake in across the globe. As April kicks off, poets and poetry lovers alike will be taking part in this annual tradition through education, events, book releases and important conversation about the outlet poetry can provide.
At AMU, we invite you to celebrate with us! Pick up a new poetry book, read a daily poem, or attend one of the many virtual events that are happening across the globe this year. Watch live poetry readings or challenge yourself to learn more about how intertwined poetry and spoken word are into history and cultural movements. Check out live stream’s or interviews with poets such as the Tattered Book Store’s conversation with Tess Guinery in regard to her book, The Apricot Memoirs.
Some national events you can take part in are the Academy of American Poet’s first-ever virtual Poetry & Creative Mind gala on April 29th or even supporting a few of our poets as they launch their new books through virtual events by Strand Book Store. Sign up to attend Valerie June’s launch of Maps for the Modern World on April 8th and the launch of Vulnerability is My Superpower by Jackie Davis on April 12th and support these amazing poets. Wherever you are in the world, we hope these events make poetry feel accessible to you.
Stay up to date on new poetry releases happening in April on both our social media and website. We can’t wait to dive deeper into the empowering and thought-provoking world of poetry with you!
